PSF Transcription - Recording Tips

Recording Environment: Provide a quiet, noise-free environment.
Microphones hear e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g:

outside noises
background conversations
vacuums
telephones
coughing/sneezing
ice rattling
paper shuffling

Equipment: Use high-quality recording equipment – don’t skimp here! Please refrain from using walkmans, hand-held recorders, speakerphones or pocket pens. Use a good quality microphone with an appropriate number of mikes for participants. Groups may require multiple microphones.

Tape Specifications: Standard preferred (not micro or mini). Do not use stereo or used tapes.

Equipment settings: Use optimum for volume and speed. Do not use "long play."

Test: Record a test sentence, and play it back for quality assessment.

Speakers: Speak clearly in direction of microphone; one speaker at a time.
